Peer Review Process

JNPM (Jurnal Nasional Pendidikan Matematika) is a scholarly journal published by Universitas Swadaya Gunung Djati in collaboration with the Indonesian Mathematics Educators’ Society (IMES). The journal publishes theoretical studies and empirical research concerning mathematics teaching and learning, mathematics education, and related areas.

Initial Editorial Review

Every manuscript submitted to JNPM is initially evaluated by the Editor-in-Chief and/or Managing Editor. The initial assessment examines whether the manuscript:

  • Is relevant to the focus and scope of JNPM;
  • Follows the journal’s author guidelines and manuscript template;
  • Demonstrates originality, novelty, and a clear contribution to mathematics education;
  • Applies an appropriate and rigorous research methodology;
  • Provides sufficient theoretical or empirical evidence;
  • Meets academic writing and referencing standards; and
  • Complies with the journal’s publication ethics and similarity requirements.

Manuscripts that do not meet the journal’s scope, formatting requirements, academic standards, or ethical policies may be rejected without external review. Manuscripts requiring technical or preliminary corrections may be returned to the authors before proceeding to the peer-review stage.

Double-Blind Peer Review

Manuscripts that pass the initial editorial review are assigned to at least two independent reviewers with expertise relevant to the manuscript’s subject area.

JNPM applies a double-blind peer-review process, in which the identities of the authors are concealed from the reviewers, and the identities of the reviewers are concealed from the authors.

Reviewers evaluate manuscripts based on both substantive and technical aspects, including:

  • Relevance to the field of mathematics education;
  • Originality and novelty of the study;
  • Clarity of the research objectives or questions;
  • Adequacy of the theoretical and empirical foundations;
  • Appropriateness of the research design and methodology;
  • Accuracy of the analysis and interpretation of data;
  • Significance of the findings and their contribution to mathematics education;
  • Quality of the discussion and conclusions;
  • Organization, clarity, and academic quality of the manuscript; and
  • Accuracy, relevance, and currency of the references.

The reviewers’ comments and recommendations are forwarded to the corresponding author for revision and response. The editorial team will make every effort to communicate the initial review decision within approximately 30 to 60 days, although the review period may vary depending on reviewer availability, the complexity of the manuscript, and the number of revision rounds required.

Peer-Review Procedure

The peer-review and publication process consists of the following stages:

  1. Manuscript Submission
    The author submits the manuscript through the JNPM Online Journal System.
  2. Administrative and Initial Editorial Screening
    The Editor-in-Chief and/or Managing Editor checks the completeness of the submission, conformity with the journal template, relevance to the journal’s focus and scope, methodological quality, and compliance with publication ethics.
  3. Similarity Check
    The manuscript is screened using Turnitin, iThenticate, or another appropriate similarity-detection tool before being sent to reviewers.
  4. Reviewer Assignment
    At least two reviewers with relevant expertise are assigned to evaluate the manuscript through a double-blind peer-review process.
  5. Peer-Review Process
    Reviewers assess the academic quality, originality, methodological rigor, significance, clarity, and technical accuracy of the manuscript.
  6. Editorial Decision
    Based on the reviewers’ comments and recommendations, the editor communicates one of the following decisions to the author:
    • Accepted;
    • Minor revisions required;
    • Major revisions required;
    • Resubmission for review; or
    • Rejected.
  7. Manuscript Revision
    The author revises the manuscript and prepares a detailed response to each reviewer’s comment.
  8. Submission of the Revised Manuscript
    The revised manuscript and response-to-reviewers document are submitted through the JNPM Online Journal System.
  9. Further Review or Editorial Evaluation
    The revised manuscript may be returned to the reviewers or evaluated directly by the editor, depending on the extent and quality of the revisions.
  10. Final Decision
    The Editor-in-Chief makes the final decision regarding acceptance or rejection after considering the reviewers’ recommendations, the authors’ revisions, and the manuscript’s compliance with JNPM standards.
  11. Copyediting and Galley Proof
    Accepted manuscripts proceed to copyediting, layout editing, proofreading, and author approval of the galley proof.
  12. Publication
    The final article is published online according to the journal’s publication schedule.

Stages 1 to 6 generally constitute one round of the peer-review process. More than one review round may be conducted when substantial revisions are required.

Similarity and Plagiarism Screening

JNPM does not tolerate plagiarism or other forms of academic misconduct. All submitted manuscripts are screened using Turnitin, iThenticate, or another reliable similarity-detection tool before being sent to reviewers.

As a general policy, manuscripts with an overall similarity score exceeding 20% may be returned to the authors for correction or rejected, depending on the nature and source of the similarity. The editorial team does not rely solely on the numerical similarity score. Each similarity report is examined to identify inappropriate quotation, unattributed copying, duplication, self-plagiarism, or other forms of unethical publication practice.

Manuscripts containing substantial plagiarized material will not be processed for publication.

Editorial Decisions

After considering the reviewers’ reports, the editor may issue one of the following decisions:

Accepted

The manuscript is accepted for publication without substantive revision. Minor editorial corrections may still be made during the copyediting and proofreading stages.

Accepted with Minor Revisions

The manuscript is considered suitable for publication, provided that the authors make limited corrections or clarifications within the period specified by the editor.

Major Revisions Required

The manuscript has potential for publication but requires substantial changes in its theoretical framework, methodology, analysis, discussion, presentation, or other important components. The revised manuscript may be returned to the original reviewers for further evaluation.

Resubmit for Review

The manuscript requires extensive revision and is not currently acceptable for publication. However, the journal is willing to reconsider a substantially revised version in a new round of peer review.

Rejected

The manuscript is not suitable for publication in JNPM because of significant problems related to its scope, originality, methodological quality, contribution, ethical compliance, or overall academic standard. A rejected manuscript will not be reconsidered unless the editor explicitly invites a new submission.

The final decision regarding manuscript acceptance or rejection is made by the Editor-in-Chief based on the reviewers’ recommendations and the editorial assessment. Reviewer recommendations are advisory and do not automatically determine the final editorial decision.

Revision Period

Authors are expected to submit their revised manuscripts within the period specified in the editorial decision letter. Unless otherwise stated by the editor, revised manuscripts should be returned within 20 days.

Authors who require additional time should contact the editorial office before the revision deadline. A revised manuscript submitted after the deadline without prior approval may be treated as a new submission and may undergo a new editorial and peer-review process.

All revised manuscripts must be submitted through the JNPM Online Journal System. Authors should also provide a point-by-point response explaining how each reviewer’s and editor’s comment has been addressed. Any suggestion that has not been followed must be accompanied by a clear academic justification.

Reviewer Selection and Conflicts of Interest

Reviewers are selected based on their expertise, research experience, publication record, and relevance to the subject of the manuscript. Academic qualifications, research interests, publication history, citation record, and h-index may be considered when appointing reviewers.

Authors may recommend potential reviewers through the “Comments for the Editor” section during the online submission process. However, the editorial team is not obligated to appoint the recommended reviewers.

Before assigning a reviewer, the editorial team will consider possible conflicts of interest. Recommended reviewers should not:

  • Be affiliated with the same institution as any of the authors;
  • Have recently collaborated or published with the authors;
  • Have a personal, professional, financial, or academic relationship that could affect their objectivity; or
  • Have any competing interest related to the manuscript.

Reviewers are required to disclose any potential conflict of interest and decline the review assignment when impartial evaluation cannot be ensured. The editorial team reserves the right to select reviewers independently to maintain the objectivity, fairness, and integrity of the peer-review process.

Confidentiality

All manuscripts submitted to JNPM are treated as confidential documents. Editors and reviewers must not disclose, discuss, reproduce, or use information contained in a submitted manuscript for personal or professional purposes before publication.

Reviewers must not share the manuscript with other individuals without prior permission from the editor. Information obtained through the peer-review process must remain confidential, even after the review process has been completed.

Reference Management

Authors are encouraged to use reference-management software, such as Mendeley, Zotero, or EndNote, to ensure the consistency and accuracy of citations and references. All references must follow the citation style specified in the JNPM Author Guidelines and manuscript template.

Publication and Open Access

Articles accepted by JNPM undergo copyediting, layout editing, proofreading, and final author approval before publication.

All articles published by JNPM are made immediately and permanently available online for readers to access and download without subscription charges. The journal applies an open-access policy to support the dissemination and exchange of knowledge in mathematics education.

Unless otherwise stated, articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution License (CC BY). This license permits readers to copy, distribute, adapt, and build upon the published work for any lawful purpose, provided that appropriate credit is given to the original authors and source.
