ABSTRACT
Background : Spermatozoa are cells produced by the male reproductive system. Infertility, a common disorder of the reproductive system, is known to correlate with cigarette smoke. Carbon monoxide from cigarette smoke may cause tissue hypoxia, leading to an increase of free radicals in the system. Antioxidants have a fundamental role in the elimination of free radicals inside the tissues and reducing oxidative stress-related apoptosis. The antioxidants in almond nuts may have an impact towards sperm production and morphology. Thus, its effectiveness towards sperm morphology in subjects previously exposed to cigarette smoke must be studied. Goals : To determine the efficacy of almond extract administration towards sperm morphology in male rats previously induced with cigarette smoke. Method : This study is an experimental study with a post-test only design. A total of 24 white rats with certain criteria were used as samples and randomly divided into 4 groups; control group (aquadest, no cigarette smoke), treatment group 1 (aquadest, with cigarette smoke), treatment group 2 (cigarette smoke, aquadest, 7 mg/20g of almond extract), and treatment group 3 (cigarette smoke, aquadest and 15 mg/20 g of almond extract). All treatments were administered using oral sonde. Results : We observed a decrease of normal-morphology sperm in KP1 compared with KK (21.190±0.323 and 37.128±0.1877% with a p <0.001). We observed an increase of normal-morphology sperm in KP2 and KP3 (32.1043±0.54 and 35.3771±0.93 with a p <0.001). Conclusion : Almond nut extract has an effectiveness in increasing the morphology of sperm white mice exposed to cigarette smoke.
