Abstract

This study aims to describe the hegemony of patriarchal ideology over women and the character Maryam's resistance to it in Afrion’s short story Maryam. The study employs feminist theory to examine gender roles and the character’s resistance. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with note-taking techniques. The data source is Afrion’s anthology of short stories, Lelaki Bukan Pilihan, published by the Medan Literature Laboratory in 2018. The results indicate that men dominate women in economic and social control, while women’s roles in the domestic sphere are more pronounced. Maryam resists this patriarchal structure by choosing not to remarry and by working independently to support herself.
